Price Drivers
What drives the price of a home charging project
The survey that sets the price
Almost the entire figure is decided in the twenty minutes an electrician spends walking the property, before a single tool comes out of the van.
The survey is not a formality. It answers four questions in sequence, and the answers determine which of the standard price bands the property falls into. What is the service rating on the main breaker? How many usable positions remain in the enclosure? How far is that enclosure from the wall where the equipment will hang? And what stands between the two — open framing, finished drywall, a masonry wall, or twenty metres of lawn?
An experienced estimator can usually name a range before leaving the driveway. What they cannot do is name it sight unseen, which is why written figures given without a survey tend to arrive with conditions attached and revise upward once the panel cover comes off.
What the owner can influence
A surprising amount of the total is elective, and the decisions that move it most are made before anyone is booked.
Mounting position. This is the lever with real money behind it. Copper is priced by the metre and labour by the difficulty of each metre, so moving the mounting point five metres closer to the panel can be worth several hundred dollars. A charging cable is long enough to cross a bay; the vehicle does not have to be parked directly beneath the unit.
Surface run against concealed run. Conduit fixed neatly to an unfinished garage wall is fast, inspectable and cheap. The same conductor fished behind finished drywall, around fire blocking and through insulation can double the hours. Owners who accept visible conduit in a utility space routinely save a band.
Output target. The full 48 amp configuration requires a hardwired unit on a 60 amp circuit and heavy conductor. A plug-in arrangement on a 14-50 receptacle caps at 32 amps and around 7.7 kW, which for a household driving modest daily distances is more than sufficient overnight. Choosing the lower output shrinks the conductor, the breaker and the bill.
Timing. If a garage is being finished, a basement opened up or a service already being worked on, running the circuit during that window costs a fraction of doing it afterwards.
Those four decisions between them account for most of the elective spend on a typical job. For the bands they produce, and the four line items that fill each one, the home charger installation price breakdown lays the whole structure out in order.
What the building decides
The rest is not negotiable, and pretending otherwise is how projects overrun.
Service capacity is first among these. If the existing supply cannot carry another continuous load, the options narrow to expanding the service or sharing what already exists — and the second of those is often the cheaper and quieter answer, since a device that arbitrates between existing loads costs roughly a third of a full service upgrade.
Distance is the second. A detached structure means trenching, and trenching means a machine, spoil, reinstatement and a materially different figure. Wall construction is the third: solid masonry, stone or double-brick turns a routine penetration into an afternoon.
Voltage drop is the fourth and least visible. Long circuits require heavier conductor than the breaker alone would suggest, purely to keep the delivered voltage within limits at the far end. That is arithmetic, not opinion, and it is why a long run costs more per metre than a short one.
The building sets the floor. The owner's decisions set how far above it the figure lands.
Where estimates diverge most
When two written figures for the same property differ sharply, the gap is rarely in the hourly rate. It is almost always one of three things: a different assumption about panel work, a different route between the panel and the mounting point, or one figure quietly excluding the permit and inspection the other includes.
Compare on scope before comparing on total. A quotation that specifies conductor size, route, breaker rating and whether the wall-mounted charging unit is hardwired or plugged in can be checked. One that offers a single number cannot, however attractive that number looks.
A figure that can be interrogated line by line is worth more than one that undercuts it by two hundred dollars and explains nothing about how it was reached.
